Magazines: Men's Health CSP analysis

1) Write a one-paragraph summary of your notes for each key concept from the booklet:

Media Language (e.g. conventions, narrative, genre etc.)
The booklet uses a lot of aggressive language on the front cover such as "Blast" and "Demolish". Inside the actual magazine most articles are written as if it's a casual conversation with some references to other topics.
Media Industries (e.g. Hearst Communications)

Media Audiences (e.g. demographics, psychographics, pleasures)
The demographics is ABC1, meaning most people would have a higher education and make a decent income able be able to spend some money on sporting equipment and a lot of luxuries advertised in the magazine.

Media Representations (e.g. masculinity)
Masculinity is presented as somewhat of a necessity in the magazine, through the use of colours and the tag lines.

2) Identify three specific aspects/conventions (e.g. cover line, colour scheme, text, image etc.) from each page of the CSP that you could refer to in a future exam. Explain why that particular aspect of the CSP is important - think about connotations, representations, audience pleasures, reception theory etc.

Front cover: Vin Diesel
Vin diesel has a very aggressive stance and facial expression.
The tag lines use hypermasculine language such as "Blast" and "Demolish"
The use of blue throughout

Editor's Letter and contents page

Makes reference to iPhone users and lifestyle. Also makes references to Greek mythology obviously suggesting that the readers of the magazine have some sort of wider general knowledge and come from a background which would have granted them the knowledge of Greek mythology as general common knowledge.

Feature: True Grit - 'The Marathon Man'
Makes clear references to the gear used to suggest that the audience would be able to afford and have an interest in it, mainly Nike.

3) Type up three media theories that you think are particularly relevant to analysing Men's Health and explain why they are significant:

Surveillance theory would be applied as majority of the audience would be reading the magazine for Health and Lifestyle tips.

Gender performance; Mens Health definitely presents masculinity as a performance of traditional, hegemonic masculinity

Masculinity in crisis, MH tries to counteract the crisis by taglines and features such as '#slaywinterblues'
