Icon Index Symbol Audi Icon Index Symbol School 2)  To let a reader/viewer know exactly what the creator strives to portray or show. Without them it'd be very hard to media creators to say or show something literally as it'd be too open for interpretation. 3)  As symbols are open to interpretations, therefore a different cultures will definitely interpret different symbols in completely different ways, therefore leading to confusion and mis-interpretation of particular symbols. 4) The ad above is trying to show that the company's buns are fresh and tasty by making them look as perfect as possible, but instead what the advert ended up looking like is someone grabbing a butt. The hand is what makes this image come across, if the hand was removed it wouldn't look as bad. 5)   This image shows a pair of car keys placed as if it's a gun, which presents the image of a car being a weapon as powerful as a gun.

Reception Theory

Dominant To suggest that no matter what upbringing you're coming from. Reebok is trying to promote their brand through 50 Cent's success. They're trying to push him across as successful despite having a very difficult upbringing and being surrounded by crime during most of his early life.  Negotiated Using 50 Cent to make the product seem cooler and more appealing towards the target audience, presumably teens. Oppositional That Reebok is trying to promote a gang lifestyle through their clothing, and also trying to appeal towards drug dealers/criminals through their use of 50 Cent and the fingerprint background on the quote. On one side, I see why someone would see this as an advert to promote gangs/criminal activities as they have a rapper who raps about murder/drugs/women very explicitly endorsing their product, especially since the brand makes clothes such as hoodies/tracksuit's etc, this may often be associated with thugs/hooligans. On the other side, they

Textual Analysis

Image
1) What type of text is it? It's a front page of a newspaper 2) How do you know? What are the key conventions that allowed you to identify the text? The "Daily Mail" logo at the top of the paper. The main headline right in the centre of the paper, along with a picture the it's right. Several smaller stories and headlines along the bottom of the paper. The really basic colours, and being majority black and white also shows us that it's a newspaper. 3) In your opinion, who is the target audience for this media text? Mostly adults above the age of 25, and elderly people. The mass demographic who'd want to read this particular copy would be interested in the main headline about the Military therefore I'd assume that'd me mostly men. 4) How would this audience access the text? E.g. where/when would they consume it? Using what device? Most consumers would pick one up and a corner store, or a metro station, some consumers may access it online such a

Denotation 50 Cent, rap artist, black and white, no colours. Rapper's quote. Reebok logo. He's wearing an urban outfit, fingerprints on the background of the quote. Two different urban fonts. Connotation 50 cent has a intimidating facial expression towards the camera. Fingerprints in the background suggest crime, or criminal activities. This Reinforces the stereotype of black people being criminals. Colour The black and white gives an urban mood and atmosphere. It gives it a sinister tone. The lack of colour also enforces the urban theme the poster is going for. Framing There's two pictures in one frame, one of 50 cent and the other of one of his quotes, with a fingerprint background. There's two quotes, the main one which is smaller and only covers the fingerprint background, and the second quote is in a bigger, and different font which goes across both images. There's no colour in either image as it's all black and white. Composition There's t
